1.Scope
1.1Thistestmethoddescribesaqualitativemethodforthe
evaluationofliquiddefoamingagentsusedtocontrolundesir-
ablefoamindilute,aqueoussurfactantsolutions.Thislabora-
torytestmethodmaybeappliedtoaqueoussystemscontaining
additionalcomponents,suchasagriculturalchemicals.This
methodisdescribedusingSIunits
1.2 Thisstandardmethoddoesnotpurporttoaddressallof
thesafetyproblems,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itisthe
responsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappro-
priatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplica-
bilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.

4.1Foamisgeneratedinahigh-speedblenderwithadilute
surfactantsolutionpriortoadditionofadefoamingagenttothe
blendercup.After1minofgentleagitationandfiveminof
rest,anyremainingfoamismeasured.Theabilityofthe
defoamingagenttoreducefoamisexpressedaspercentfoam
reduction.
5.SignificanceandUse
5.1Thistestisdesignedtodeterminetheabilityofa
materialtoreduceoreliminateundesirablefoamthatcanbe
generatedduringthemixingandapplicationofagricultural
chemicalsindiluteaqueousmixtures.
5.2Thismethodisusefulfortestingliquiddefoaming
agents,suchas“siliconeemulsion”or“organic”typedefoam-
ingagents.Inprinciple,itmightalsobeusedtotestdry
antifoamagentswithminormodificationstotheprocedure.
5.3Thismethodcouldbeemployedtodeterminethe
relativeeffectivenessofonedefoamingagentversusanother.It
islefttotheuserofthismethodtointerprettheresultswith
respecttotheactualfielduseofthedefoamingagentstested.
5.4Thismethodassumesthatthedefoamingagentbeing
testedhassufficientdurabilitytomaintainitsactivityforthe
durationofthetest.
5.5Sodiumlaurylethersulfateasthefoamingagentis
describedinSection 7,Reagents.Ifdesiredtheuserofthistest
methodmayselectanalternativesuitablefoamingagent.
6.Apparatus
6.1 Blender—Theblendershouldhavearemovable1.2liter
glasscupequippedwitharemovablestainlesssteelblade
assembly(Note1),andamotorbasecapableofano-load
speedof22,000rpm.
NOTE 1—Thebladeassemblyshouldturnfreelybyhand.Ifitdoesnot,
replacetheassemblybeforeusingthistestmethod.
6.1.1 Blenderassembly— Plugthepowersupplycordofthe
blenderintothepoweroutletofavariabletransformerwitha
0to120Voutput.Plugthetransformerintoa115Vground
faultprotected(GFCI)powersource.Usingwater,anelec-
tronicbalance,andamarkingpen,mark50mLgraduationson
theglassblendercup,from200to1000mL.Thisiseasilydone
byplacingtheblendercuponthebalance,taringthebalance,
thenadding50gwaterandmarkingthewaterlevelonthe
exteriorofthecup.Continueadding50gwateratatimeand
markingthewaterleveluntilthecupcontains1000g.See Fig.
