1.Scope
1.1Thistestmethodcoversthemeasurementofthetearing
strengthoftextilefabricsbythetrapezoidprocedureusinga
recordingconstant-rate-of-extension-type(CRE)tensiletesting
machine.
1.1.1TheCRE-typetensiletestingmachinehasbecomethe
preferredtestapparatusfordeterminingtrapezoidtearing
strength.Itisrecognizedthatsomeconstant-rate-of-traverse-
type(CRT)tensiletestingmachinescontinuetobeused.
Consequently,thesetestinstrumentsmaybeusedwhenagreed
uponbetweenthepurchaserandthesupplier.Theconditions
foruseoftheCRT-typetensiletesterareincludedin Appendix
X1.
1.2Thistestmethodappliestomostfabricsincluding
wovenfabrics,airbagfabrics,blankets,nappedfabrics,knitted
fabrics,layeredfabrics,andpilefabrics.Thefabricsmaybe
untreated,heavilysized,coated,resin-treated,orotherwise
treated.Instructionsareprovidedfortestingspecimenswithor
withoutwetting.
1.3Tearingstrength,asmeasuredinthistestmethod,
requiresthatthetearbeinitiatedbeforetesting.Thereported
valueobtainedisnotdirectlyrelatedtotheforcerequiredto
initiateorstartatear.
1.4Twocalculationsfortrapezoidtearingstrengthare
provided:thesingle-peakforceandtheaverageoffivehighest
peakforces.
1.5ThevaluesstatedinSIunitsaretoberegardedasthe
standard.Thevaluesstatedininch-poundunitsmaybe
approximate.
1.6 Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthe
safetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itisthe
responsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappro-

4.1Anoutlineofanisoscelestrapezoidismarkedona
rectangularspecimen(see Fig.1).Thespecimenisslitatthe
centerofthesmallestbaseofthetrapezoidtostartthetear.The
nonparallelsidesofthemarkedtrapezoidareclampedin
paralleljawsofatensiletestingmachine.Theseparationofthe
jawsisincreasedcontinuouslytoapplyaforcetopropagatethe
tearacrossthespecimen.Atthesametime,theforcedeveloped
isrecorded.Theforcetocontinuetheteariscalculatedfrom
autographicchartrecordersormicroprocessordatacollection
systems.
